Plain Text는 원래 ASCII 즉, Americal Standart Code for Information Interchange 표준에 포함된 96개의 문자만으로 이루어진 텍스트를 의미하였다.
그러나, 지금은 Control Code가 포함되지 않은 텍스트를 의미하는 말로 쓰인다. 예컨대 ISO-8859-1(Western Latin)이나 ISO-8859-15(Western Latin + euro sign)은 물론이고, 우리나라에서는 EUC-KR로 쓰여진 텍스트도 Plain Text라고 통칭한다.
