두 개의 막대기 ¶

회사 동료가 낸 수수께끼.
두 개의 막대기가 있다. 각 막대기의 한쪽 끝에 불을 붙여서 막대기가 모두 불에 타는데 걸리는 시간은 각각 1시간으로 같다. 그런데 각각의 막대기는 재질이 균일하지 않아서 타들어가는 속도가 늘 같지 않다. 어떤 부분은 빨리 타들어가고 어떤 부분은 아주 느리게 타고, 어쨌든 하나가 완전히 타는데는 1시간이 걸린다. 이러한 성질을 가진 두 개의 막대기로 45분을 잴 수 있을까?
만사가 그렇지만, 알고 보면 매우 쉽다.
그런데 이노무 TeX은 봐도 봐도 모르겠으니...
대충 정답을 짐작해 보면…

매크로를 작성하다보면, 숫자 상수(numeric constant)가 필요할 경우가 종종 있다.
65를 값으로 갖는 \const라는 이름의 숫자 상수를 만들고자 한다.
어떻게 하면 될까?
먼저 떠오르는 방법은,
\newcount\const \const=65가장 무난하지만, 카운트 레지스터를 이용하므로 메모리 사용에 낭비를 초래하는 단점이 있다.
카운트 레지스터를 사용하지 않는 방법으로 다음을 생각할 수 있다.
\def\const{65}
첫번째 방법보다는 낫지만, \const는 매크로이므로 그 값을 얻기 위해서는
전개(expand) 해야 하고, 텍은 그 특성상 숫자가 아닌 토큰이 나올 때까지
토큰을 계속 전개하므로, \const 바로 뒤에 매크로가 나온다면, 그
매크로도 전개된다.
마지막 방법은,
\chardef\const=65이 방법이 해답이라고 할 수 있다. 위와 같이 정의된 \const는 그가 처한 상황에 따라서 문자 또는 숫자로 사용될 수 있다.
\const BCD와 같은 상황에서 \const는 \char65인 'A'로 사용되어 ABCD가 된다. 하지만,
\advance\total by\const라고 하면, 문자 'A'가 아닌 숫자 65로 사용되어, \total이라는 카운트 레지스터 값에 65를 더하게 된다.
이처럼 chardef로 상수를 정하는 방법은 첫 번째 경우처럼 카우트 레지스터를
사용한다는 단점도 없고, 두번째 방법처럼 매크로를 전개할 필요도 없다.
하지만 chardef로는 0부터 255까지의 숫자 밖에 사용할 수 없다.
255보다 큰 숫자 상수는 \mathchardef를 사용하면 된다. 이는
32767("7FFF) 까지 가능하다
